What is the Danger Zone Around a School Bus?

The school bus danger zone is the 10-foot area around all sides of a bus where visibility is limited and students are at the highest risk of being struck.

It includes the front, rear, and both sides of the bus, particularly the area directly in front of the bumper where the driver cannot see small children.

Most student fatalities happen outside the bus in the danger zone — not during the ride. This blind spot is often misunderstood by both drivers and students. A visible lighting system can help make this zone safer by clearly marking safe paths and stopping points.
