What Do School Bus Stop Arm Laws Require?

School bus stop arm laws require drivers to stop when a bus extends its stop arm and activates flashing red lights, signaling that children are entering or exiting.

In most states, drivers must stop in both directions unless there is a physical barrier between lanes. Violating this law can result in heavy fines or license suspension.

Despite these laws, millions of illegal passings occur each year. Enhanced visibility — like extended lighting systems — helps reduce these violations by making the stop zone unmistakable even in poor conditions.
