Bus Stop Safety Starts Before the Bus Arrives

When people think about school bus safety, they often picture the moment the bus stops and extends its stop arm. But safety risks begin well before that moment.
Bus stops are not controlled environments. Students arrive at different times, from different directions, and often while traffic continues to flow normally. Drivers may not yet expect a stop, especially in areas where bus stops blend into everyday streets.
Visibility during this window matters.
Children may be waiting near the roadway, crossing early, or standing near parked vehicles. In low light or poor weather, they can be difficult to distinguish from the surroundings. Even attentive drivers may not recognize that a bus stop is active until the bus itself appears.
This is why bus stop safety cannot be treated as a single event. It is a sequence that begins with student arrival and ends only after students are safely on board and traffic resumes.
Planning for safety before the bus arrives helps close a gap that is often overlooked.
