Why Early Morning Bus Stops Carry Higher Risk

Many school bus routes operate before sunrise for much of the year. During these hours, visibility is naturally reduced and driver alertness varies.

Early morning conditions often include darkness, glare from headlights, frost on windshields, and limited contrast between objects. Students wearing winter clothing may blend into their surroundings, especially when colors are muted or reflective elements are absent.

Drivers approaching a bus stop may still be adjusting to lighting conditions. Even when obeying traffic laws, their ability to detect movement can be compromised.

This combination of low light and active movement creates elevated risk. It does not indicate negligence. It reflects reality.

Recognizing early morning bus stops as higher-risk environments allows school districts and communities to focus attention where it is most needed.
