Why Bus Stops Are the Most Vulnerable Part of the Route

School buses operate in highly controlled ways once students are onboard. Routes are planned. Drivers are trained. Vehicles are designed with safety in mind.

Bus stops are different.

They exist in shared public spaces where traffic patterns vary, sightlines change, and conditions are unpredictable. Students may approach from multiple directions. Vehicles may be parked nearby. Weather and lighting can shift daily.

This lack of control is what makes bus stops the most vulnerable point in the transportation process.

Addressing risk at the bus stop requires acknowledging that it is not just an extension of the bus. It is its own environment with its own challenges.
