How Are Pedestrian Safety Systems Keeping Missouri Students Safer?

Updated: Jun 8, 2019

Missouri Students Safer with Pedestrian Safety System

Meramec Valley R-III Schools recently purchased the Gardian Angel® school bus lighting system. Their school bus routes are primarily rural areas in Missouri with not many street lights, which makes the addition of the pedestrian safety system a much needed feature their children loading and unloading the school bus, particularly in dark hours.

Gardian Angel® is an LED light that fits on or under the front bumper of the bus and shines across the roadway illuminating a path where students are crossing, thereby increasing the visibility of the students. This pedestrian safety system can be found on the Top School Bus Fleets of 2018.

Missouri was the 11th state to have the Gardian Angel® as an available option to school buses back in 2015. The school bus light has continued to dominate the pupil transportation industry by having 18 states currently permitting the led school bus lighting system.

Steve Gardner, not just the Founder and President of Gardian Angel, LLC, but also the inventor of the Gardian Angel® cites “From 1979 -1999 in Missouri there were 10 children fatalities in the loading zone of a bus. The problem has continued to grow as the reports show that during the 2004-2005 school year there were 2 more fatalities in the state, then again in 2005-2006 school year another fatality occurred, and yet again in 2010-2011 school year another fatality in the state of Missouri.“

An excerpt from the 2005-2006 National Loading and Unloading Survey states: “A six-year-old boy was struck and killed by a truck that passed the school bus as it was unloading students in the afternoon. The bus was pulled onto a parking lane and had its stop arm activated. The truck drug the boy 80 feet after striking him before stopping. The vehicle left the scene of the accident. The school bus driver did not see the incident. “Our lighting system continues to make the children more visible while decreasing the stop arm violations at the same time” says Mr. Gardner.

It comes as no surprise that the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) issued 11 recommendations recently to increase pedestrian safety. Some of them involve a revision of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, FMVSS 108 for lights correctly aimed on the road, and incorporating pedestrian safety systems. One of the NTSB’s findings was that motor vehicle safety standards should not limit advanced vehicle lighting systems that have been shown to have safety benefits. Gardian Angel® has proven itself in 18 states, has the data to support, and still growing strong.
