How Winter Weather Impacts School Bus Safety and Student Visibility

Winter brings shorter days, early mornings, and unpredictable weather—all factors that make students harder to see while waiting for or exiting a school bus. NHTSA notes that buses are already highly visible with flashing red lights, stop arms, and cross-view mirrors. The real question is: Are the students visible?

Tips for Parents and Schools:

• Encourage bright, reflective outerwear for students

• Clear sidewalks and paths to bus stops

• Use supplemental lighting systems like Gardian Angel LEDs to make students stand out in low-light or snowy conditions

Prioritizing student visibility reduces risk and increases driver compliance, keeping every child safer on their way to school.
