How Many Students Are Hit Outside School Buses Each Year?

Each year in the U.S., an estimated 12 to 15 students are killed and hundreds are injured while walking near school buses — most in the ‘danger zone’ around the vehicle.

These incidents often happen during boarding and unloading, where driver blind spots and poor visibility put students at risk.

The greatest danger isn’t the ride — it’s the pickup and drop-off. Safety lighting systems that alert drivers and clearly mark safe walking zones can reduce these tragedies.
