Low light conditions, such as early mornings or cloudy days, reduce drivers’ ability to see students waiting at bus stops. Shadows, glare, and dim environments all slow recognition time.

Some districts have begun experimenting with enhanced lighting around bus stops. Systems that improve visibility of students, without creating glare or distraction, demonstrate the importance of designing environments for recognition rather than assuming perfect driver attention.
