How Far Should You Stop From a School Bus?

Drivers must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing, unless otherwise directed by state law.

This distance gives children space to safely cross and prevents tragic blind spot accidents.

Many violations happen simply because drivers don’t recognize the danger zone or underestimate stopping laws. Reinforcing stop zones with lighting increases compliance and reduces risk.
