How Far Should Drivers Stop for School Buses?

Q: How far away must drivers stop when a school bus activates its stop arm or flashing lights?

A: Most U.S. states require drivers to stop at least 20–30 feet away from a school bus with flashing red lights or extended stop arms. Exceptions include divided highways with physical barriers. While the bus is visible, ensuring students are clearly seen at the curb is critical.
