When School Starts, So Does the Danger: 3 Back-to-School Safety Priorities

Backpacks are zipped, buses are rolling, and kids are back on the streets. But with all the excitement, the start of school also brings a troubling trend: the highest rates of school bus-related injuries occur in the fall.

Here are three priorities every district should lead with this September:

1. Danger Zone Awareness

Students are most at risk within 10 feet of the bus. Highlighting this zone with a white light system like Gardian Angel drastically improves driver awareness and student guidance.

2. Reinforce Safety Protocols

Yes, it’s busy. But now is the time to review loading procedures, crossing signals, and driver rules for stopping. Repetition saves lives.

3. Upgrade Lighting—Before a Near Miss

A student doesn’t need to be struck for a district to feel the impact. Near misses, parent panic, and social media outrage can hurt trust and reputation. Prevention is cheaper than PR damage control.

Be the district that leads in safety—not the one reacting.
