Student Clothing and Visibility: Why Color Matters

Bright and reflective clothing increases the chance that a student will be seen quickly by a driver. Dark clothing, backpacks, or accessories can blend into the environment, especially during low light.


Some school districts have implemented voluntary programs to encourage reflective gear, particularly in fall and winter months. Studies show these small steps can meaningfully reduce near-misses.


Enhanced visibility technologies, like lights integrated at bus stops or on bus exteriors, complement these behavioral measures to make students more recognizable in all conditions.
